Background

My name is Kevin Williams, and I launched The LayerCraft Lab in May 2026.

I studied computer engineering during college and have worked in IT for over a decade. I began as a support specialist in 2010 and transitioned to software development in 2018. My interests and hobbies have varied a lot over the years, but always centered around agriculture, electronics, and engineering.

The LayerCraft Lab allows me to combine all three of these interests by designing and publishing functional prints for the home, garden, and other outdoor activities. It also gives me an outlet to support and promote right-to-repair and open-source hardware and software.

Purpose

I've always had a fascination with technology and how it can enhance people's lives. For a long while, that seemed to be the purpose of tech in general. But that's no longer the case.

Technology these days largely equates with big companies harvesting and selling our data, manipulating us through closed algorithms, and forcing yearly upgrades through planned obsolescence. The products that we purchase are obscure, low quality, and designed to be thrown away rather than repaired.

Now, with AI added to the mix, we're constantly under surveillance while the environment is being destroyed. And, even though none of us asked for it, AI is shoved into just about every application and product.

I do not hold to this. Technology can still enhance our lives without exploiting us.

The purpose of The LayerCraft Lab is not only to share my technological journey and promote open-source, but to fight back against the narrative and trends by showing that we, as individuals, can take back our lives. We can build our own solutions that are modular, open, and that we actually own. We can build our own futures.
